externalising support services
– bringing independence to enterprise

helping small work-based services to become independent from their local authorities.

Most local authorities have work-based day services that run a bit like enterprises. Local authorities want these services to develop and flourish, but helping them to become independent takes time and skill, and presents unique challenges. If done badly, a great little service could be damaged or worse, even close.

Community Catalysts is working with local authorities to find ways to help valued work-based services to operate as independent enterprises and to thrive outside the authority.

how we do it

We start by learning all about the service – talking to managers, staff, workers, people using the service and their families. We find out what people love about the service, what they think could be better, and how they think it could develop. We make sure that we understand as much as possible about the costs of the service and where the money comes from to fund it.

We discuss what the service might look like if it operated outside the authority, and envisage the new possibilities independence could bring.

We use all that information, along with our experience, to make recommendations and suggest a plan for change. After that we can support the service into independence and make sure that it is flourishing outside the authority.
