shared lives

Shared Lives is an established and highly successful way off helping people who need support to live in their community, without having to live alone.  Shared Lives is based on relationships which involve everyone’s values.

Shared Lives carers are trained and approved to include someone who needs support in their family and community life. They can provide longer term accommodation and support, support for people during the day or short breaks in a consistent, family setting. In addition Shared Lives carers can provide extended family support to people living in their own homes. Shared Lives is used by people of all ages and with a wide range of disabilities, illnesses and support needs, including people with learning disabilities, people with mental health problems and older people.

how does it work?

Shared Lives is delivered in partnership between a local agency (a Shared Lives scheme) and locally recruited and approved people (Shared Lives carers).

The Shared Lives scheme ensures that carers are competent and have all the skills and knowledge they need to provide people with high quality support. The scheme then receives referrals, matches the needs of people who need support with carers and monitors the arrangements.

Shared Lives carers help people to connect with their local community and the wider society. They use their own friendships, family and community networks to benefit the people that they support.
