{"id":423,"date":"2019-01-14T15:51:36","date_gmt":"2019-01-14T15:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.communitycatalysts.co.uk\/lacnetwork\/working-with-young-people-to-support-them-to-get-a-life-not-a-service-one-year-on\/"},"modified":"2024-08-15T11:14:07","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T10:14:07","slug":"working-with-young-people-to-support-them-to-get-a-life-not-a-service-one-year-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.communitycatalysts.co.uk\/lacnetwork\/working-with-young-people-to-support-them-to-get-a-life-not-a-service-one-year-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Working with young people to support them \u2018to get a life not a service\u2019- one year on","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #696969\">The Derby team are heading into the second year of their \u2018Innovation Programme\u2019\u00a0project working with young people linked to the care system and have put together\u00a0some reflections about their learning to date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #696969\">The team have used the Local Area Coordination approach in the project and some things they have learnt so far include:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It works!<\/strong>\u00a0Providing young people with opportunities to connect with someone who is based in their local area, who listens, treats them with respect and reliably does what they say can reduces dependence on formal services, especially if that person is mindful of their own power and agency in the relationship.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>language we use really matters<\/strong>. For example, the people we\u2019ve come into contact with through this specific piece of work are really hurt when being described or even defined as a \u201ccare leaver\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Services cannot fill the space left by the loss of human relationships<\/strong>, and as a result our response to young people needs to reflect the things we can do and acknowledge the things we can\u2019t. An approach that\u2019s principally based around assessments and outcomes just doesn\u2019t work.<\/li>\n<li>As a system, we need to think about and\u00a0<strong>redefine \u201cthe deal\u201d.<\/strong>\u00a0The young people we\u2019ve met through this programme often have an expectation that the worker is going to \u201cfix things\u201d or resolve issues for people, often through accessing money or resources. This fosters dependence and kills personal resilience and aspiration.<\/li>\n<li>There is a role for Local Area Coordination working across the system \u2013 supporting people to articulate and work towards their own vision for a good life; keeping families connected; knitting communities together whilst preventing, reducing and delaying the need for more formal costly services<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s\u00a0<strong>all about relationships.\u00a0<\/strong>Whether it is with the citizens we come into contact with or colleagues working in services. Taking time to build quality relationships based on mutual understanding and trust is key and should not be overlooked or
