Skills for Care Accolades

Guest blog from Jim Thomas, Skills for Care, Programme Head – Workforce Innovation

All too often our sector doesn’t draw attention to successes and yet we know we have such a brilliant story to tell. We could be much better at telling our story which is one reason why Skills for Care created our Accolades awards to celebrate not only excellence in service delivery, but the innovators too.

Entering the Accolades gives providers of social care and support services of all sizes the chance to have their great work recognised. It also offers an opportunity to share best practice across the sector so we can continue to make innovative improvements to help those who need care and support.

There is a specific Accolade for best employer of under 250 staff which may the obvious one for micro and small care providers to think about entering. But I hope these organisations will also look at some of the other categories which are equally applicable to smaller organisations, who are so very often the hotbed of new thinking and innovation, which they then embed in their organisations and communities with huge impact.

I often think about how much of that innovation is lost because it is spread far and wide across the sector and this is one of the bonuses of making the Accolades final – that great ideas can be shared on a national stage. We are in a time of huge change for adult social care so more than ever we need to think smarter and do things differently, but more than that, we need to shout about it.

With that in mind we have listened to feedback on the entry process and have simplified it so that hard pressed smaller organisations can get a strong entry in. Our team of locality managers are on hand to offer advice and support to employers thinking about entering.  Please get in touch at accolades@skillsforcare.org.uk if you would like any information or support.

To enter the Skills for Care Accolades go to www.skillsforcare.org.uk/accolades . The closing date for entries is 24 September 2015.

The Accolades ceremony where the winners are announced will take place on Thursday 10 March 2016. Every employer who has been shortlisted in prior years has told us that being a finalist has not only made a difference to the morale of their workers who attend the gala ceremony, but to the teams back at base too.

But for us the really important thing about the Accolades it is seeing workers excited and proud that their work supporting citizens in our communities is being celebrated in public in a way that is all too rare.  So please take the opportunity to share the excellence of your organisation and profile social care for what it really does – support people to live their lives.
