Compassionate Companions

A volunteer initiative in East Suffolk is transforming end-of-life care through compassion, conversation, and community. Compassionate Companions, founded by Dr Lindsey Crockett of Peninsula Practice, offers non-medical support to people facing life-limiting conditions.

Recognising the need for unhurried and empathetic care, the service empowers trained volunteers, known as Companions, to help patients and their families navigate care choices during their final year of life.

No prior experience is required to become a Companion – just a willingness to share time and compassion. Volunteers commit approximately one hour per week and will make a meaningful impact in their communities. Funded by the NHS, the programme provides free training that includes two in-person days and an online session covering safeguarding and confidentiality. The next training sessions will be held on 17th, 18th, and 20th November at Kesgrave Community Centre (KWMCC), Ipswich.
