Moya started her own community enterprise after caring for her mother for a number of years. Moya’s mother – a retired teacher, and an inspirational and gregarious woman – became unwell and Moya was able to support her to keep living independently. When Moya found herself facing redundancy, after working in the civil service for 29 years, she thought about offering care and support to others full time.

Moya wanted to use the skills she had learnt when providing quality support to her mother to deliver a tailored service for other people in her community. Moya now offers companionship, meal preparation, cleaning, gardening, ironing, supporting people to maintain interests and hobbies, leisure activities and social opportunities.

Moya has completed the Community Catalysts’ Development Programme and now has everything she needs in place to deliver a legal, safe, effective and sustainable community enterprise.

Community Catalysts really helped me because I have never been self employed before.  There were times when I thought, am I doing things right? By being introduced to Community Catalysts I have always felt that I have had someone who has had my back. I have always been able to contact Tom to run ideas by and ask what are the next steps. Tom has put me in touch with people who are like minded, it has been really beneficial not to feel alone particularly in a pandemic.  I feel like I have been able to launch my enterprise a lot sooner due to the help of Community Catalysts.

Things are going well – I have everything I need in place, am promoting the enterprise and have four people who I am supporting already. I really like meeting people, listening to their stories and providing support that makes a difference to their lives. Being self-employed is fantastic, I like the exhilaration of having control over my days and meeting wonderful older people.

The benefits I have reaped so far are amazing, I feel really empowered that I am doing my own thing. I would really recommend people who have ideas like mine in Wrexham to get in touch with Community Catalysts.
