Katy Roberts Private Care

Katy is from Coedpoeth and before setting up her own enterprise in 2018 offering care and support, she worked for a bank for many years.

She wanted to provide quality, bespoke personal care in her community. During the pandemic in 2020, Katy saw an advert for Wrexham Community Catalysts and contacted Tom to help her promote her services in the area and to ensure she was keeping up to date with current best practice.

Things were going alright. I had a few people to support and was plodding along. You only know what you know! But after working with Community Catalysts, I was able to bring in new approaches, systems and procedures whilst retaining what has always been important to me.

Working with Tom, Katy was able to gain access to local online learning courses on safeguarding, manual handling and food preparation. He also worked with Katy to ensure she had safe lone-working procedures as well as confidentiality and complaints procedures, a photo ID and robust contracts to use with people. Tom worked with Katy over two months to help her complete the development programme and meet the ‘Doing it Right Standards’.

It was a great process –at the right pace. Super useful.

Katy gained further support to develop new flyers and create an online presence on Small Good Stuff – Community Catalysts’ website for community enterprises – and on Facebook. Since working with Tom and meeting the ‘Doing it Right Standards’, Katy is now supporting many people across the week and is even considering growing her enterprise and recruiting a team. Tom will support Katy to look at her options and register with the Care Inspectorate Wales if she takes that next step.

It’s one of the best things I have ever done. Running my own enterprise has been incredibly rewarding and I would seriously recommend people get in touch with Tom at Community Catalysts. I have been able to support many more people and the connections I have made with the social services team have been invaluable. I am able to share strong policies and processes with the people I work with whilst still remaining personal and authentic. My week is now full supporting older people in the community! In the future I look to grow my enterprise and maintain the core values of what we do.
