Set up in 2016, Hands of Hope is restoring and developing a walled kitchen garden and 22 acres of AONB land in Hawkhurst, on the Kent and East Sussex Border conserving the site’s natural, community and environmental heritage. Our mission is to “Improve the health and wellbeing of people and planet by connecting communities to nature and each other.” Since 2019, we have been delivering programmes tackling food poverty, rural isolation and loneliness as well as improving mental, physical, and environmental health for local communities. We have a no-dig, productive, organic, market garden with Soil Association Accreditation.
The difference we make:
(I) Helping Hands Lunch Club in Peasmarsh – monthly social club for older people tackling rural isolation.
(II) Hope Farm Shedders – Bi-weekly social & skills project tackling rural isolation and improving social cohesion running Weds and Friday 10am to 2pm. Skills including green woodworking, wood turning, metal working, tool repair, site improvements and intergenerational training.
(III) Grow, Cook, Care, Share programme uses horticulture, cooking, and nature-based activities to combat food poverty, loneliness, and skills deficits, fostering healthier, happier communities. This volunteer-led, programme engaging vulnerable groups, those with complex needs, families and older people, in learning, wellness and social activities aligned to growing, cooking, and nature. Using modern facilities, we aim to enhance physical activity, healthy eating, education, community cohesion, skills development, and social inclusion.
(IV) Host various groups in our classroom, including The Dementia Experience and yoga classes.
(VII) Volunteering – Multiple volunteering sessions including corporate volunteering opportunities.
