Protecting Vulnerable People from Abuse of Position Fraud

Protecting Vulnerable People from Abuse of Position Fraud

Many older and vulnerable people rely on trusted family members, friends, carers or neighbours to help manage their finances and day-to-day affairs. While most support is given with care and good intentions, sadly some people misuse this position of trust for financial gain.

In the 2025/26 financial year, an estimated £51 million was stolen from pensioners across the UK through Abuse of Position fraud, where someone known to the victim exploits their trust to steal money or assets.

Community Micro Enterprises often work closely with people who may be vulnerable to financial abuse and can play an important role in spotting concerns early and signposting people to appropriate support.

Signs to look out for may include:

  • Unpaid bills despite adequate income
  • Missing money or possessions
  • Unexplained changes to bank accounts or spending patterns
  • Sudden amendments to wills or legal documents
  • A person becoming isolated from family, friends or support networks

If you are concerned about a friend, neighbour or family member, start a conversation and seek advice.
