Supporting families affected by Dementia – Dementia Action Week

Dementia is a devastating condition which affects thousands of families across the UK. Approximately 982,000 people in the UK are estimated to be living with dementia and this number is expected to increase to 1.4 million by 2040.

Dementia is primarily a disease of later life but can also affect younger people (which is called young-onset dementia). In the UK, 65% of people with dementia are women.

Dementia is a group of symptoms. It’s caused by different diseases that damage the brain. The symptoms get worse over time and include:

  • memory loss.
  • confusion and needing help with daily tasks.
  • problems with language and understanding.
  • changes in behaviour.

Dementia is progressive which means that symptoms may be relatively mild at first, but they get worse over time. There are many types of dementia but Alzheimer’s disease is the most common. The next most common is vascular dementia.

Community Catalysts have been offering vital help to micro-enterprises supporting families living with or affected by dementia. If you or your family are looking for support and advice, the Alzheimer’s Society is running Dementia Action Week from 19th – 25th May 2025. Visit their website for information and resources, and to get a copy of their official campaign pack.
