People with learning disabilities as community leaders

Great Communities in Warrington

In Warrington, Great Communities connects people over 16-years-old who are not eligible for social care services.

The University of Chester undertook research to explore people with learning disabilities and/or autism’ experiences of playing a part in Great Communities in Warrington. It was carried out using Photovoice, where people used cameras to tell stories of the impact of Great Communities on their lives and communities.

This method of storytelling resulted in photographs and descriptions which show the positives of coproduced projects. The projects provided friendships, connections to new communities and the natural world and opportunities to work together on new interests. They also improved mental health, journeys of personal development, creativity and positive impacts on local environments and communities.
