As a member of the Community Catalysts development programme community micro-enterprises have made a commitment to the ‘Doing it Right’ standards. Doing it Right means their enterprise or group has pledged to being viable, sustainable, committed to high standards of practice and won’t let people down. It also means the enterprises has committed to services, supports or activities that are safe and high quality, offering the help people need, when and how they need it in a respectful way that puts them right at the centre.

Things to think about for when looking for care or support

When choosing a community micro-enterprise or small provider, it’s important to look for signs that they are safe, reliable and professional. This includes checking how long they’ve been running, asking for references, and finding out how they assess and manage risks. You should make sure they follow safeguarding and health-and-safety policies, have up-to-date DBS checks, and hold the right insurance. It’s also important to ask what training they and their workers have, and how they keep their skills current. A clear contract should set out what support will be provided, when, where, and how much it will cost, and you should check how they will keep your information confidential. People should also ask how to make a complaint, what happens if things go wrong, and whether the service needs to be registered with the Care Inspectorate Wales. Finally, make sure they have the correct employment status and are properly registered with HMRC.

• I fully understand the boundaries of care regulation (CIW) and operate my enterprise within these boundaries at all times
• I am registered with HMRC and have received a unique taxpayer reference number – as applicable (sole traders only)
• I have current public liability and other insurance that covers all relevant aspects of what my enterprise offers
• I have a Disclosure and Barring Check (DBS) for myself and any new staff who join my organisation – within the last 3 years
