In an era of outputs, metrics, and KPIs, the word ‘trust’ can feel like a soft term – abstract, fuzzy, and difficult to quantify. Yet in Local Area Coordination (LAC), trust is not just a nice-to-have; it is the foundation upon which everything else is built.

This month, Local Area Coordination teams from across the country have been gathering in person to connect, reflect, and learn from one another.

Leadership groups are a vital pillar of Local Area Coordination. They bring together a wide range of voices, including people with lived experience, local community members, and senior system leaders from councils, health services, voluntary and community organisations, and other sectors.

Local Area Coordination proves that a different approach to public services is possible: one built on relationships and focused on people’s strengths, not just their problems. It’s not about ticking boxes or meeting targets; it’s about focusing on what matters to each person and their family.

Since 2017, Local Area Coordinators in York have been supporting attempts to redefine how public services interact with communities, not by stepping in and taking over, but by amplifying the natural authority of grassroots organisations and charities. This year, I captured the fascinating testimonies of four people representing different York organisations: Kit and Beth, Adam, and Holly.

As the broader conversation around social care evolves, the themes of transformation and renewal are more relevant than ever to Local Area Coordination, which offers a proven way to achieve sustainable change within the service system.
