Local Area Coordination is an approach that builds on what is strong in people’s lives and communities. It’s all about meaningful relationships.
Local Area Coordinators based in communities, walk alongside people and encourage them to recognise their own capabilities, gifts, community networks and the practical resources they have around them. This happens before they consider more formal supports and services.
Gary lives alone and was struggling to connect to others in his community. His wellbeing and health were being impacted and when he visited an event held by his GP practice he was put in touch with Jackie, the Local Area Coordinator in South Tyneside.
Jackie spent time with Gary, understanding his life and some of his challenges. She was able to help him get connected and involved in his community and to start to live the life he wanted.
Watch Gary’s story.
“Local Area Coordination for Gary really gave him the opportunity to find out about what’s on his doorstep, because that information wasn’t readily available for him. So through our relationship I was able to share all that information, but more importantly, I was able to be with him. Because without that presence he would never have gone to any of the groups.”
Jackie Liddell, Local Area Coordinator
“Jackie has helped me a lot. Brought me into this environment, which then has also made me open up a little bit more.”
