Our community micro-enterprise projects change the lives of people who set up their own micro-enterprise. Antony’s story is one example of how a person can achieve their dreams and ambitions with the right support.
Antony lacked confidence and was unsure where to start with setting up his own micro-enterprise or small business. The process of becoming self-employed felt overwhelming, and he needed guidance, encouragement, and practical support to move forward.
Joe, our Catalyst in the Royal Borough of Kensington at the time, was introduced to Antony. Catalysts walk alongside people on their journeys, providing coaching and encouragement and helping with all the practical aspects of starting a business. It can be daunting to do it alone and often the legal and administrative aspects put people off.
Joe built a trusted relationship and took time to understand Antony’s strengths, interests and ambitions. Rather than focusing on what Antony found difficult, Joe supported him to recognise what he had to offer.
With firsthand experience as an autistic traveller, Antony had the knowledge, insight and understanding to support other people with learning disabilities who share the same passion for travel, and to understand how these experiences could shape a meaningful and viable business.
With Joe’s encouragement and Community Catalysts’ strengths-based approach, Antony began to see himself differently — not just as someone with an idea, but as someone capable of making it happen.
Together, they developed AJ’s Travel, which helps people with learning disabilities to travel confidently and independently.
