Neighbourhood and preventative support

Local Area Coordination is the neighbourhood and preventative support we develop with councils across the UK.

Local Area Coordination is all about relationships!

Local Area Coordination is a form of neighbourhood and preventative support currently available to a population of one million people in over 100 different communities. It is a relational approach that builds on what is strong in people’s lives and communities.

Strong evidence is available to show Local Area Coordination reduces pressures on public services, simplifies the system, supports integration and strengthens cross-system collaboration. Fifteen academic evaluations have been completed across England and Wales, so a substantial amount of evidence.

How it works

Local Area Coordinators, employed by local authorities and based in the community, walk alongside people and encourage them to recognise their own capabilities, gifts, community networks and the practical resources they have around them. This happens before they consider more formal supports and services.

Gary’s story is an example of the difference Local Area Coordination can make to people’s lives. It shows how the approach and support of a Local Area Coordinator helped him to connect to his community, which meant he avoided social isolation and loneliness and could begin to live a happier life.

Watch a video of Gary’s journey alongside Jackie, the Local Area Coordinator.
